Our Mission

Protecting Childhood. Building Community. Delaying Smartphone Use.

Our mission is to empower parents, schools, and communities across Trinidad and Tobago and the larger global sphere to work together in protecting childhood from the harms of excessive smartphone and social media use. Through education, advocacy, and collective action, we support families in delaying smartphone adoption, fostering healthier development, stronger relationships, and richer real-world experiences for children and young people.

The Problem

Children today are growing up in a world where smartphones and social media are increasingly shaping their friendships, attention, self-esteem, and daily experiences. While technology offers many benefits, unrestricted access at a young age can expose children to risks such as cyberbullying, harmful content, sleep disruption, social pressure, and excessive screen time.

Smartphone Free Childhood Trinidad & Tobago believes that childhood should be a time for exploration, creativity, meaningful relationships, and real-world experiences. By bringing parents, schools, and communities together, we can create an environment where children have the opportunity to develop confidence, resilience, and healthy habits before entering the digital world.

The Solution

The solution proposed by Smartphone Free Childhood is grounded in collective, community-led action that makes it easier for families to make healthier choices about technology. Rather than placing the burden on individual parents to resist pressure alone, the movement builds shared agreements between families to delay giving children smartphones and access to social media until they are older.

It also works through schools, encouraging coordinated policies that reduce phone use during the school day and strengthen focus, learning, and social interaction. Alongside this, the movement provides practical tools, such as parent guides, school resources, and alternative communication options, helping families navigate real-life challenges.

The Evidence

While technology can provide valuable opportunities for learning and communication, growing evidence suggests that delaying smartphone and social media access can support healthier emotional, social, and cognitive development. Smartphone Free Childhood promotes a precautionary approach backed by research that gives children more time to mature, and develop the skills they need before navigating the complexities of the online world.
